How do bacteria break down any molecule?

How quickly do high enzyme producing bacteria and in what quantities?

Bacteria have the capability of producing many different types of enzymes. They are living organisms that respond to their environment. In general, bacteria are capable of producing enzymes that degrade a wide variety of organic materials such as fats, oils, cellulose, xylan, proteins and starches. It is important to note that all of these materials are polymers that must be reacted with more than one type of enzyme in order to be efficiently degraded to their basic building blocks. Nature provides a specific "team" of enzymes to attack each type of polymer.

  • Production of enzymes begins as soon as the bacteria begin to grow. The cells must obtain nutrients from their surroundings, so they secrete enzymes to degrade the available food.

  • The quantities of enzymes produced vary depending on the bacterial species and the culture conditions (e.g., nutrients, temperature, and pH) and growth rate. Hydrolytic enzymes such as proteases, amylases, and cellulases, etc. are produced in the range of milligrams per liter to grams per liter.

  • Bacteria can grow very quickly, doubling their populations in as little as 20-40 minutes. In some applications, it is common to "boost" bacterial colonization

MERITS & DEMERITS OF PRESENT TREATMENT METHOD

Removal of colour is especially problematic because they can easily pass through conventional treatment systems and without much change. Physical and chemical methods, such as chemical coagulation/flocculation, ozonation, oxidation, filtration, ion exchange, irradiation, precipitation, adsorption and and electrochemical methods, and have been widely used for the decolorization. These methods are not feasible techniques since they are very expensive, experience operational problems and formation of hazardous by-products or intensive energy requirement. Although physical and chemical methods provide high color removal, they are disadvantageous, since color removal efficienc varies with dye type contained in the wastewater and these are expensive methods. Though, the physical and chemical methods offer some solutions to the problems, it is not affordable by the unit operators. Such methods are often very costly and although the dyes are removed, accumulation of concentrated sludge creates a disposal problem.

MERITS OF ADVANCED BIOLOGICAL TREATMENT TECHNOLOGIES BY USING NANOZYME

Biological degradation is recognized as the most effective method for degrading the dye present in the waste. Research over a period of two decades had provided insight into the various aspects of biological degradation of dyes. There is a need to find alternative treatments that are effective in removing dyes from large volumes of effluents and are low in cost, such as biological or combination systems. This proposal reviews the current available technologies and suggests an effective, cheaper alternative for dye removal and decolourisation applicable on large scale.

Biological removal of dyes from effluents of textile and dyestuff manufacturing industry offers some distinct advantages over the commonly used chemicals and physicochemical methods. These include possible mineralization of the dyes to harmless inorganic compounds like carbon dioxide and water, and formation of a lesser quantity of relatively harmless sludge. The use of microorganisms for the biodegradation of dyes is an attractive alternative to the development of bioremediation processes for the treatment of textile wastewater. Biological methods are environmentally friendly, produce less sludge than physical and chemical systems, and are relatively inexpensive, as the running cost is low. Microbial discoloration can occur via biosorption, enzymatic degradation or a combination of both.

Removal of dyes from these wastewaters has been reviewed with respect to biological decolorization as well as complete biodegradation of the dye molecules. Emerging techniques with reference to biological treatment of these wastewaters have been discussed under aerobic, anaerobic, and combined anaerobic–aerobic systems. Although most textile wastewater treatment plants use biological treatment processes to remove biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD), most dyes cannot be completely biodegraded by the conventional biological wastewater treatment processes (Cowdung dumping). In order to meet more increasingly stringent environmental regulations and laws, new decolorization technologies continue to receive increasing attention.

The biological decolorization methods include using bacteria to degrade dyes and using biomass to adsorb dyes. For the biodegradation of dyes, a wide variety of microorganisms, capable of decolorizing of a wide range of dyes are reviewed (Parameswari, 2007 & Saratale et al., 2011). Bacterial isolates are optimized for growth and biomass production before using them for decolorizing dye effluent. The bacterial isolates recorded maximum color reduction. The pH and electrical conductivity (EC) were reduced in the decolorized effluent, and a reduction in biologic oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, total suspended solids, and total dissolved solids (TDS) were also observed.

Nowadays research has indicated that biosorption, is one of the most promising technologies and the removal of dyes by different kinds of biosorbent materials has been receiving more attention. Biological wastewater treatment is often the most economical and eco-friendly alternative, relative to other physical and chemical processes. Microbial decolorization methods, such as bioremoval by growing culture in medium and biosorption by (living) microbial biomass, are commonly applied to the treatment of textile industry effluents because various microorganisms bacteria's are able to remove different classes of dyes. The interactions between microorganisms and dyes depend on the chemical properties of all the reaction partners. Bacteria are a better raw biosorbent material for the removal of reactive dye due to their unicellular nature and high growth rate. bacteria cells can be easily cultivated into inexpensive growth media, and are a readily available source of biomass that has potential for bioremediation of wastes at lower pH values. Bacteria’s can adapt and grow in various extreme conditions of pH, temperature and availability of nutrients as well as high concentrations of pollutant because of the high CFU counts (colony forming units).

ACTIVATED SLUDGE PROCESS

  • The activated sludge process is a wastewater treatment method in which the carbonaceous organic matter of wastewater provides an energy source for the production of new cells for a mixed population of microorganisms in an aquatic aerobic environment.

  • The microbes convert carbon into cell tissue and oxidized end products that include carbon dioxide and water.

  • The activated sludge process is effective but slow and not as efficient as other processes./p>

MOVING BED BIO REACTOR MBBR

  • The Moving Bed Bio Reactor (MBBR) offers 10 Times the Loading in 1/5 the time. The most effective and efficient system.

  • In the MBBR bio film technology, the bio film grows protected within engineered plastic carriers, which are carefully designed with high internal surface area. These bio film carriers are suspended and thoroughly mixed throughout the water phase.

  • With this technology it is possible to handle extremely high loading conditions without any problems of clogging, and treat industrial and municipal wastewater on a relatively small footprint.

SUBMERGED AERATED FIXED FILM

  • This technology utilizes an aerobic fixed film process that is a combination submerged attached growth and activated sludge processes.

  • This system is designed to be installed into a two compartment, where the first compartment provides majority of BOD removal, and the second compartment polishes the BOD. Rigid block-type media is submerged within the treatment module, providing surface area for microbial growth.

SEQUENTIAL BATCH BIO REACTOR

The sequencing batch reactor (SBR) is a fill-and draw activated sludge system for wastewater treatment. In this system, wastewater is added to a single “batch” reactor, treated to remove undesirable components, and then discharged. Equalization, aerations, and clarification can all be achieved using a single batch reactor

  • Wastewater fills the tank, mixing with biomass that settles during the previous cycle.

  • Air is added to the tank to aid biological growth and felicitate waste reduction

MEMBRANE BIO REACTOR

  • The membrane bioreactor (MBR) process is a technology that consists of a suspended growth biological reactor integrated with an ultrafiltration membrane system, using the hollow fiber membrane.

  • Essentially, the ultrafiltration system replaces the solids separation function of secondary clarifiers and sand filters in a conventional activated sludge system.

  • Ultrafiltration membranes are immersed in an aeration tank, in direct contact with mixed liquor.

ROTATING BIOLOGICAL CONTACTOR

  • A rotating biological contactor consists of a series of discs or media blocks mounted on a shaft which is driven so that the media rotates at right angles to the flow of sewage.

  • The discs or media blocks are normally made of plastic (polythene, PVC, expanded polystyrene) and are contained in a trough or tank so that about 40% of their area is immersed.

  • The biological growth that becomes attached to the media assimilates the organic materials in the wastewater.

  • Aeration is provided by the rotating action, which exposes the media to the air after contacting them with the wastewater.
